Dear Supporter,

One of our dear children said the darndest thing yesterday which really sums up what we do and why we're here. He came into our office to see his socialworker who asked him, "How is my friend today?" He looked at her with the most serious expression and said, “We’re not friends!” She was a bit taken aback and asked him what he meant. He said, “We’re not friends. We’re family!” Of course, that meant he got the biggest hug ever!

Our children make the challenging work we do for homeless families just a little bit easier, and one of my favorite things is introducing new friends to these little friends and welcoming them to the Bright Beginnings family. It gives me great pleasure to welcome incoming boardmembers Paul L. Berry, Jr., Ann M. Friedman, William B. Johnson, Dr. Ruth Hubbell McKey, Billie Johnson McSeveney and Dr. Brian J. Peters to this family. I also want to thank departing boardmembers Kimberly Boyd-Lewis, Susan Gutchess, Larry King and Sally Wells for their many years of service to our families and their children. I know they will remain dear friends of Bright Beginnings. Once you’re part of this family, you’re always part of the family and we know we can call on you at any time.

I hope all of you will visit us soon for our special Dream Booster Tour that will pack inspiration and information into 60 minutes through the stories of our children and their parents. I invite you to join us for this special tour if you have not visited us lately or you’re new to our family. Sign up today! I promise it’s something you’ll want to share with everyone you know.

There is much work to be done to prepare homeless infants, toddlers and preschoolers for kindergarten and to provide the comprehensive family-centered services that stabilize their families. And, there’s more room in our family!

Dr. Betty Jo Gaines
Executive Director

P.S. There’s room in our family for you to connect, donate and volunteer!

Family + Fun + Fitness = Family Fun & Fitness Day on
August 12, 2011

Our annual Family Fun & Fitness Day is a unique, hands-on opportunity for corporate and community partners to celebrate the end of a successful school year with homeless children and families. This celebration is an opportunity for parents and their children to spend an afternoon together having fun with new friends from our community. Danya International, Inc. has already signed on as a lead sponsor and their team is hard at work preparing their fruit tasting station while PNC Bank and the Legacy Foundation are hard at work planning their bubble place and the maraca-creation station. Many activity tables are still available! Call Latoyia Allen at 202.842.9090 to sponsor Family Fun & Fitness Day or sponsor an activity table.

Our kids were unbeatable in fruit and veggie contest!

Two Bright Beginnings children won first place at the DC Department of Health Get Fresh Festival on August 4, 2011. The Baby Fruit and Veggie Costume Contest for childcare centers  serving Washington, DC required that kids between 2-5 years old wear original fruit and vegetable costumes and say the name of the fruit they represented. Our handmade turnip and coconut costumes – and the personality of our kids – stole the show! Bright Beginnings will receive fresh fruit snacks for 3 days. See our contest photo album.

2011 Parent Auction Photo Album

Thank you for donating $3,000 in auction items and gift cards for our 2011 Parent Auction in June which rewarded homeless parents who are making all the right moves to support their child’s education and stabilize their families. Our parents used the Parent Points they earned throughout the year to shop for household items for the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen as well as some really nice items for the kids.

Looking for a unique volunteer experience?
Try Bright Beginnings!

Bright Beginnings is a one of a kind volunteer experience that’s different every time. Come join your neighbors, friends, colleagues and some of our favorite corporate partners in our classrooms. Capital One volunteers recently played on the playground, read to our children and served as willing patients so our aspiring doctors could listen to their heartbeat. We also welcomed enthusiastic volunteers from BBYO Panim, the Center for Nonprofit Advancement, Crowell and Moring and the Pittsburgh Free Methodist Church during the last month. What adventures will happen while you’re volunteering? View our Volunteer Adventures Photo Album and then call Heidi Bluming at 202-842-9090 to schedule a time to volunteer!
